If you've seen the commercial on TV it shows a tool that does it all, but its only half true. It can't cut any wood over 1 inch thick because the blade wanders. The T square keep getting hung up in the track and the hold down device is not designed to hold round stock. Its a good machine but not a great one..

Rockwell should make it apparent that this is a table saber saw, NOT a jig/scroll saw. Calling it a "BladeRunner" is as clear as calling it a "PudBlump". Rockwell should state what type of blade shank is compatible. It needs to be the kind that has 2 crescent shaped indentations and 2 tabs above the indentations on the shank. However, there is a stenciled shape of the blade on the unmentioned tool drawer located just underneath the table top in the front.

This is the only table saber saw that I've ever located. There used to be tables that would mount hand-held routers or saber saws, but they seem to be no longer sold. I was looking for an inexpensive substitute for a small band saw for making only straight cuts, but all the table scroll saws I found did not have square tables, and so, they can't have fences or even the ability to mount a temporary fence/jig for (trying to) making straight cuts.

It comes with a miter gauge attachment that's definitely cheap. There are three 2-holed shim strips supplied for the gauge. I had to "tin snip" one to produce a "washer" shim which is on the angle adjustment knob. Using a whole shim results in an unacceptable gap between the fence and the table top. Even so, the gauge's fence also doesn't lie perfectly flat on the table, probably because the table top being made of sheet metal rather than being a machined-flat slab of cast metal ($$$). This makes the table surface uneven and creates gaps under the miter gauge's fence.

My main reason for getting this tool is to cut 0.62 inch hard plastic (epoxy resin+fiber glass) printed circuit boards for circuit prototyping purposes. Thin stock can unintentionally slip underneath the fence which causes a miss-cut. This doesn't happen on materials thicker than about 1/10th inch. I would gladly purchase a better miter gauge, but the table's gauge slot is proprietary and won't hold a standard gauge. Why did Rockwell do this ?!

I solved the problem of thin stock slipping under the miter gauge by fabricating a one-inch-on-both-sides right angle piece of sheet metal that sits between the upright of the gauge's "protractor" and the fence bar. It's about 6 inches long. See the "user's images".

Overall, the unit is easy to use, is reasonably quiet, has reasonably little vibration and generally works well. The supplied blades are very poor quality. I am using Bosch T118A 24-tpi blades purchased at Lowes which were the only brand available, but work well. Most of the other brand blades sold had the other shank type which do not fit this unit. Strangely, my local Home Depot carries no blades with the right shank type.

I have no intention of using the wall mount bracket at this time. I would sooner build a custom shelf/table, especially since the unit's feet are rubber and should grip a wooden surface well. The supplied wall mount seems convenient, but holds the unit with only 2 small plastic hooks that attach to the table top's lip. The bottom of the unit is free to swing out when pulled, though I guess this would never be a problem. While the wall brackets looks strong, the table attachment method to the bracket is very hokey. I would rather Rockwell excluded the wall brackets (or made them optional) and instead had a flatter table top and standard miter gauge slots. I would gladly pay more money for these two features. Spent a lot of time trying to make this saw cut through simple things (like 3/4 inch plywood) and it just wouldn't work for us, even after buying new blades for it. Goes in a few inches and stalls out, blade just stops turning. It starts up fine, spins for a little while, but doesn't seem to have enough power to make it through normal treated plywood. Pretty big disappointment considering how positive all the other reviews are. The saw seemed very underpowered to us, so much so that we couldn't use it on even basic projects around the house (making plywood boxes for gardening and compost.) Not sure if we got a flukey one or what.

Update: After some more troubleshooting it turned out the blade was just loose somehow, even though it was running it took forever to get up to speed. If this happens take the blade housing apart, reassemble and tighten everything. Once this was fixed the saw worked fine! - By Daniel Linehan

I can't justify spending very much money on a circular saw. I'm a part-time remodeler, not a professional carpenter, so take that caveat for what its worth. I can't justify the money for a worm-drive saw, especially since they're so much heavier. The circular saw isn't a tool I use very often for really heavy-duty applications anyway. The miter saw and sawzall both get considerably more use. For most applications with dry wood and non-beveled cuts, this saw has more than enough power. If you need to do a lot of jobsite bevel cuts at 2 inches deep, this saw might not have enough power. I prefer a table saw for those applications. With a sharp blade, this saw easily cuts through any nominally sized 2 inch lumber and plywood. And for most homeowners and DYIers, isn't that enough? I've used this saw for many remodeling applications, and it has held up just fine.

This saw got poor reviews due it being the saw only- which is great for those of us who have other dewalt tools and all ready have batteries. Otherwise it is a fine saw for use when pulling out a corded saw is too much work or your not near electricity. The saw arrived within a week, in perfect condition and I have been framing in a bathroom with it all day. It is a great tool and it almost keeps up with my mag77 only I don't need to roll out any cord's.

PLEASE NOTE: this saw has recieved some undue bad ratings because it is a BARE TOOL (a perfect replacement or addition to your existing 18v DeWalt tool collection) It does not come with a battery or charger ... well duh! A single battery retails for over $80 alone, what do you expect? It does however come with a blade (nice little suprise to me).

Bought the saw in Jan-08 and have been using it for a major moulding project. I've borrowed a Craftsman "Professional" compound miter saw in the past and learned what I would look for if I ever purchased this type of saw. When you buy this saw, I feel you get higher quality things you need, not a feature laden saw with mediocre components. You'll appreciate the tall fence, the blade guard, a dust bag that actually catches sawdust, a high quality miter table/gauge without stickers, a 15 amp motor, and a stout and sturdy frame. The miter lock is so much nicer than a screw type, and the detent override comes in handy for those angles close but not quite at the standard angles.

The saw I used in the past would collect sawdust between the swiveling miter table and the miter gauge, eventually making it difficult to adjust your angle, eventually forcing you to take the table apart for cleaning. I'm very impressed by how smoothly this table adjusts from side to side.

For trim work, I have found you just don't need to buy a saw with lasers and clamps and whatever else. Just buy the right saw the first time, a sturdy one like the DW713. - By John

I purchased the factory reconditioned version of this product and was amazed that when I unpacked it the saw didn't even look like it was used. It came in a brown box but when opened you would have thought it was a brand new saw. I have owned 3 other miter saws, Craftsman, Hitachi and Makita and far and away this one is better. First, the quality of the construction is much better as it has less plastic pieces where it matters, table, fence, miter gauge and back throat. Second the miter gauge is the absolute best as it is metal and it has all the relevant notches for angles. Plus it the angles are much more accurate than the other saws. Third the dust collection is excellent even without a vac attached. The others tend to allow saw dust to go everywhere while the Dewalt shoots it straight out the back. Fourth the quality of the cut is better right out of the box with the blade it came with. While this is easily changed with the other saws it was nice. I cut primarily base board molding and crown molding with my saw. The base board molding is 3 1/2" and the crown is 3". No problem with cut sizes or having enough capacity available to do the job. - By Johnson

This is a great deal for the money if you already have the batteries and charger. This saw does not have the light which I miss and didn't come with a rip fence or a case; it's a light duty saw. If it's your only saw, you'll be sorry; it just doesn't have the torque of a corded saw and will choke in a slight bind while cutting plywood sheets or pressure treated 4x stock where the blade's burried; situations where even a homeowner corded saw will power through. If the blade is touching your work, the saw can't start. It just grunts coming up short of enough torque to start the cut. Anything but a perfect cutting angle in a perfectly straight cut will bind and stop the saw.

The trigger safety interlock is aggravating! I buy pro model corded saws to eliminate that dumb switch, but you need it in a battery saw if you store it with the battery installed; like everyone does. I have incredibly large hands and still find that trigger interlock a stretch to reach; ergonomically, it's in the wrong place for a comfortable grip. There is no charge level indication unless you put the battery on the charger; then you can only tell if it's > or < 80%. All that said, I really do love the saw and find myself grabbing it first. The cut line on the table is dead on accurate; first saw I've ever had that was. It's light and fast and under normal conditions you can't outwork the batteries. I framed and sheathed two 48' gable ends and cut 2x4's and 5/8" plywood all day. I changed batteries twice and the battery was recharged well before the one in use died; I consider that completely acceptable run time. I wouldn't expect to use it for long rips (straight or beveled) or for anything greater than 2x, but for anything short of full-on framing, I'll grab this saw out of my truck first; it's just awesome not to have to deal with cords and extension cords! - By James Gage

Got this in the mail two days ago. I intended on using until I got my DeWalt runnig again (Ipe and remodeling, is hard on chordless saws). Well I put it through the paces today w/ the Makita blade that came on it none the less. And it is now the main tool and the DeWalt is the back up. I can't wait till I get the Freud Diablo blade on it to see what it can really do! Easy to use rip fence, good eurognomics, smooth running and powerful. A great chordless saw. I was ready to upgrade from my Delta 10" miter to a 12", but was waiting for Dewalt to come out with a laser system. I bought this DW716 about 2 weeks ago and so far I love it. I opted NOT to get the sliding miter, since they are not as accurate as the non-sliding, especially for making furniture. This saw is very powerful and smooth, and the laser works well, though it took a while to get it set up (the instructions are marginal at best, leaving you to twiddle with it for an hour or more to try to get it to line up in every direction).

One thing I HIGHLY recommend is a RIDGID MS-UV miter stand. I found one at Home Depot and it is the best miter saw stand on the market, and very reasonably priced. It folds and unfolds easily, and the wheels make mobility great. It is MUCH better than the Dewalt or the Delta miter saw stands. Why Dewalt doesn't have a folding one with wheels is beyond me, and the Delta one is just too small for a 12" miter. The combination of a stand and a 12" miter needs wheels, as it is very heavy. You can leave the Dewalt 12" miter mounted to the RIDGID, and even set it vertically in the corner out of the way when you don't need it. Anyway, Amazon doesn't sell the Ridgid MS-UV yet, but Home Depot does. - By A Professional Consumer

OK so lets make something clear really quick before I talk about the saw. A lot of carpenters ask me what I think the best saw is. Depends on what you do for a living and how you do it. No tool manufacture makes every tool they have in thier line perfect. For example the Dewalt 12" slider is very inaccurate, but this saw is not. The Bosch jigsaws are amazing tools but Bosch's 10" slider is always a pain to stay square and just doesnt hold up for finsih trim work. With that said here is my review on the DW716. I need two saws for being a finish carpenter. A 12" non sliding miter saw for cutting big material and big crown and base in position. All resonably portable 12" sliding saws have blade deflection due to the rail and 12" blade, but i need the capability os a 12" blade. I also have a Hitachi 10" slider that I love if I am doing a huge 8-10" crown, paneling, or lid work or small cuts with base cap or even large casing. I've beat the crap out of the DW716, cut miles of base, crown, deck work etc, in and out of the back of my truck, rained on, etc.. and it does a great job. I recommend for this product to get a thick kerf saw blade with 60+ teeth because of the saw capacity you will use it to cut tall material vertically, and you don't want a thin kerf to wander and deflect when you go down to make a cut. The stock blade is good for cutting things you dont want to cut with your expensive blades like demo material, pretreated wet lumber etc. A CMT or Forrest ChopMaster are great blades to use. The Freud Industrial blades are good as well but dont use the diablos, they dont last and are not in the same catagory as the industrial series. Another thing to mention is how convenient the miter over ride feature is for changing a 45 to a 45.5 etc.. This saw stays accurate and is very accurate. This saw is not the same as the cheaper 715 because the 715 has the motor on the right that gets in the way of big cuts and the 716 motor is placed higher up and has the bigger fence and dual bevels for changing weird base cuts etc. It is very accurate, cuts great and does a great Job for most tasks. It only cross cuts 8" however I flip the material over all the time and it always turns out a perfect 90.. I recommend also to build an auxiliary fence out of hardwood to not rely on the fence. They move a little with pressure because they are so tall but it's not worth discarding the thought to purchase this saw. Dust collection is suprizingly good and the bags fills up quickly. I could care less about dust collection because to me its no reason not to buy a saw. I think dust collection is over rated because u still have to sweep at the end of the day anyway so does it realy matter it all goes on the trash eventually. accuracy is whats important. The saw is very powerful and you can tell when you squeeze the trigger it jumps. No big deal if you're a carpenter, but an inexperienced do-it yourselfer might be intimidated by the power. I'm a finish carpenter and highly recommend in the Dewalt miter saw line as follows-the 708, the older 12" slider not the newer DW718, and this 716. Recently my husband and I built ourselves a home. He worked as a professional homebuilder for many years before moving on to supervisor positions, so when it came time to pick out a sliding miter saw he talked with his guys. They had great things to say about this saw, mostly that the performance, quality, and features were equal to any saw on the market, even those that cost a lot more. They were right!

We bought ours from Smallring_Sales, not through Amazon. It arrived fast, in perfect condition.

The saw, equipped with the right blades, took care of every task from initial framing to hanging the final trim. It did it accurately, and without a problem in the year+ it was on the jobsite. It got wet, we knocked it over, etc. No issues.

I have used this item extensively over the last 60 days. It is very well designed for daily use. I am installing solid oak floors (roughly 1100 sq ft). I move it in and out of the house every night to cut. I also do fine carpentry for fun so accuracy was a concern for selecting the right saw. I would definately buy this saw again. It is very accurate and flexible for quickly making different cuts. The saw is a BEAST! To utilize the full slide range make sure you have alot of room in your wood shop/garage before you purchase. It aslo has good power to rip though 3/4" oak all day long. This saw is a solid 4star rating, I only have 2 cautions before you purchase:

1. The stock blade is junk. Buy a nice blade to replace it with your purchase.

2. Adjusting the side to side bevel to square isn't as easy as the directions make it out to be. Make sure everything is loose and be patient with the adjustment screw otherwise you will strip it. It could have just been me, but it was a pain in the ... to asjust is 2 degrees. It did not arrive adjusted, so check it before you use.

The disclaimer: I am not a professionsal, but I do use the saw almost daily. I will NEVER buy another miter saw as this is above and beyond the quality and capability I could ever need. I have also gone from entry level saws to this (Ryobi/Craftsman to Bosch). I hope this helps. - By Breezy

After too many years of unsatisfactory results with yellow and gray sidewinder circular saws, I decided I deserved a good worm drive saw. All the reviews of the Skilsaw were pretty positive, and I liked the idea that Bosch had continued making such an old design with limited changes. First use was a revelation, As many have noted, the saw tracks very well, and following a line is no longer a WAG as with a sidewinder. Some other handy features are the depth markings on the shoe adjuster, the folding hanger hook, and even the sole plate has been thoughtfully dimensioned to 1 1/2" on one side of the blade and 3 1/2" on the other. Can you say, "Standard 2 x 4 size"?

In spite of light alloy usage, this a heavy machine. I suppose the weight is something of an advantage as the power output is substantial. It amazes me to see videos of pros using this tool with one hand on framing jobs at scary heights. All in all, a good product, good enough that finding one on eBay for much below market doesn't happen very often. - By Joseph Bobst

this is the classic framing saw, I wanted a high quality handheld circular saw and based on what I saw contractors using I figured if I got this one I couldn't go wrong. Well, I sort of did. I bought this not from Amazon but from CPO Skil as a recon; the saw is great. BUT. the foot when set at the 0 degree detent is not exactly 90 degrees to the blade, and there's no adjustment. The Bosch 1677M which is the new and updated version of this same saw includes among other improvements a foot assembly with a fine tuning adjustment for just this issue. The good news for me is that I can buy the Bosch replacement foot for less than the cost difference between what I paid for my recon Skil and a new Bosch saw, and the part numbers for the two case pieces are identical so it should be compatible; however, if buying new, I would highly recommend going with the Bosch 1677M just for that one refinement alone. Yes I know that it is a framing saw but there's no reason that a tool of this quality AND PRICE shouldn't be able to be set up to produce exactly square cuts without fiddling around with fine setup - if there's a 0 degree detent, it should be able to be adjusted so that the detent is at zero degrees plus or minus a fraction of a degree. The Skil is not capable of this out of the box; the Bosch is. 'nuff said.

This isn't a *bad* saw... but the Bosch is a refinement of this same design (Bosch owns the Skil name now. I'm not sure why there's differences between the Bosch saw and the Skil - you'd think that they would have discontinued one, and/or applied improvements equally to both. But they didn't, and the Bosch in my opinion is the superior product, even taking into account that the Bosch is typically slightly more expensive most places that you look. - By N8N

This is my first sliding mitre saw, I've owned two basic mitre saws before, both of them cheap units, one from Sears (Craftsman) and one from Canadian Tire (Mastercraft). I'm in Ottawa Ontario, purchased this saw through Amazon and imported it as it is not available in Canada until late 2009. I wanted a 10" saw since I already own some 10" blades, and 12" blades are more expensive.

I'm not a professional contractor, more of a serious DIY-er. So far this year I've installed hardwood and new baseboard and casings throughout the main floor of our house, and I'm now using this LS1016L to complete a two level 23x21 foot deck with lots of angles and stairs out back. I thought it was high time I get myself a good quality saw with a reasonable cutting capacity. The LS1016L seemed to fit the bill.
